SpaceX to Cast Turbine Blades In-House, Up to 18 Months Faster

Elon Musk says SpaceX is pre-emptively tackling one of the biggest constraints facing large-scale data center expansion. Current electrical grids are not designed for large-scale AI data centers. Musk intends to tackle this problem by addressing the limiting factor in the production of new natural gas power plants. This is intended as a stopgap measure while SpaceX and Tesla work to significantly increase solar production.

SpaceX and Tesla are each building 100GW/year of solar production capacity as fast as possible, but natural gas will still be needed to supplement and bootstrap solar for several years.

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) August 29, 2026

Musk wrote on August 29, 2026, that natural gas will still be needed to supplement and bootstrap solar power for several years. He called SpaceX’s casting effort “a profound game-changer,” although the claim comes from Musk rather than an official SpaceX announcement.

Casting is the bottleneck

The limiting factor for natural gas turbine production, according to Musk, is casting the blades and vanes. These components sit at the heart of a turbine and must withstand extreme temperatures, making foundry capacity a critical part of the production process.

By bringing that casting work in-house, Musk said SpaceX could accelerate turbines coming online by up to 18 months. That timeline should be treated as Musk’s stated target. He did not identify specific sites, production dates, or turbine designs that SpaceX plans to support.

The move suggests SpaceX is looking to remove power bottlenecks while its solar manufacturing plans ramp up. Rather than waiting for renewable power to scale, the company could use additional natural gas plants to support growing AI and industrial loads in the interim.

Solar at industrial scale

Musk also pointed to a much larger solar manufacturing effort, with both SpaceX and Tesla targeting 100 GW of annual solar production capacity.

That would put each company’s planned output at an enormous industrial scale. For comparison, a single gigawatt of solar capacity already represents a major utility-scale installation. Musk did not explain how SpaceX and Tesla would divide production or where those factories would be located, only that both companies are pursuing the capacity as quickly as possible.

Natural gas has become a recurring part of Musk’s plans for supporting AI and industrial power demand. Pairing it with in-house turbine casting would give SpaceX another way to address the power bottleneck while solar manufacturing catches up.

What is still missing

There are still few details on how SpaceX would expand into natural gas power production. Musk has outlined the need and potential timeline, but there is no detailed production plan or confirmation of specific facilities.

For now, the next signs to watch are tooling, hiring, facility work, or a SpaceX update confirming that turbine components are entering production.
