The Grid Fin is an independent news site covering SpaceX in full: rockets and launches, Starlink, xAI, and the patents and technologies that shape what flies next.
We started in 2026 because too much Space and AI news is either a press-release rewrite or a hype cycle. Our job is to make the complex parts understandable without flattening the details that matter. If a patent is just a patent, we say so. If a flight test is a test, we do not call it operational.
Our name isn’t just a random word that we chose. A grid fin is the titanium control surface SpaceX uses to steer a Falcon 9 booster back through the atmosphere. It is a central part of SpaceX’s ambition to make its hardware reusable and effective, and that’s what we chose to represent ourselves.
What We Cover
Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, and Starship, including flight tests, manufacturing, and the infrastructure at Starbase, Florida, and Vandenberg. Starlink, from the satellites on orbit to the service on the ground, including Direct-to-Cell and the V3 generation built around Starship. xAI and the Grok family of products. And the patents, factories, and regulatory filings that rarely make a press conference and often decide the next year.
We write for readers who already care about this industry and still want the extra step: how it works, what the evidence is, and what is still unknown.
How We Work
We publish two kinds of pieces. News when something actually moves: a rollout, a flight, a product launch, a filing. Explainers when the hardware or the company needs more than a headline: how a landing works, what Starlink V3 changes, what a patent does and does not prove.
We prioritize primary sources: company announcements, patents, launch licences, regulatory records, and on-the-record statements. Rumours and preliminary claims are labelled as such. We credit other reporting when we use it.
The Grid Fin is independently owned and edited by Karan Singh. A small team of human writers reports, explains, and edits the work. We may use AI tools to organize research, transcribe, or compare sources. AI output is not a source, and it does not publish. A human writes. A second human editor approves.
Editorial decisions are independent of advertisers, of SpaceX, of xAI, and of anyone else we cover. Sponsors do not get to review, alter, or kill a story. Paid material is labelled. The full version lives on our Editorial Standards page.
