Cathie Wood’s $10 Trillion Starship Bet is Endorsed by Elon Musk

On 15 September, Ark Invest head Cathie Wood leaned in on her bull math with Starship and noted that every single Starship launch could potentially generate $1 billion in revenue. With SpaceX aiming for 10,000 flights per year, that’s a potential revenue of $10 trillion with just Starship by 2030.

She also mentioned that the $1.75 trillion IPO that SpaceX launched with, and its current $2.10 trillion market cap will be history, meaning that in her eyes, its never been a better time to buy $SPCX. Her argument draws on analysis from ARK Invest, including connectivity revenue estimates developed by Sam Korus.

Elon Musk replied to Wood, and his responsible was fairly straightforward.

It’s not impossible

Expanding the Theory

Today, Falcon 9 (and Heavy) contribute to the vast majority of Earth’s mass-to-orbit numbers, and SpaceX’s long-term plans make that look like a drop in the bucket, especially with Starship. If SpaceX can get Starship into the perfect reusability cycle that they’ve envisioned, the 10,000 launches per year number doesn’t even feel like that much.

After all, expanding human consciousness to the Moon, and then Mars after that is something that will require an immense amount of equipment and material, as well as people and the consistent flow of supplies to keep everything running.

While those numbers may seem ridiculous, the value of expanding into space isn’t one to discard on the notion that it is insane. The minerals and materials, as well as research opportunities available in both micro- and zero-gravity environments are immense. Even now, SpaceX is working with BentoBox to bring items manufactured in micro-gravity environments safely down to Earth using its Starfall capsule.

Where the $1 Billion Comes From

Korus’s June 2026 analysis provides the foundation for the per-launch estimate. He placed connectivity revenue at roughly $19 million per terabit per second based on historical Starlink performance. He also estimated that a Starship launch carrying Starlink V3 satellites could add approximately 61 Tbps of capacity. Multiplying those figures produces a potential $1 billion in revenue per launch, just for Starlink.

It's not rocket science.

61 Tbps per Starship launch

$19M * 61 = ~$1 billion in rev per starship launch

The calculation depends on Starship’s ability to deploy large numbers of Starlink V3 satellites, along with the revenue those satellites could generate from additional network capacity. It illustrates how ARK’s assumptions about bandwidth and launch cadence combine to produce the headline revenue projection.

However, the calculation also depends on how much customers are willing to pay for that capacity. Korus noted that revenue per Tbps could decline as the constellation expands and additional bandwidth becomes available. That means deploying more capacity would not necessarily translate into the same level of revenue indefinitely.

The Real Constraint

Musk’s response follows both his and SpaceX’s ambitions to reach 10,000 flights per year. If the math checks out, $10 trillion in annual revenue by 2030 might just be possible. For now, the projections remain an investor thesis built around Starship’s potential launch capacity and the expansion of Starlink V3.

The key question is whether SpaceX can turn that capacity into sustained revenue at the scale ARK and Wood envision. Launch cadence, satellite deployment, customer demand, and connectivity pricing will all influence the outcome.
