Starlink said its next-generation V2 service would launch in Japan with NTT Docomo and deliver what it described as “5G speeds” for streaming, browsing and voice calls.
The new service is supposed to launch in 2028 with Starlink Mobile V2, which will be a major step forward for Starlink services in Japan. The new service will include voice, high-speed internet, and direct links to Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
A Step Forward from Mobile V1
Japan already has a first-generation Starlink direct-to-phone service. Docomo launched docomo Starlink Direct on April 27, 2026, which enabled access to text messages and data for select lightweight applications. Docomo allows compatible phones to access the service without a separate charge when outdoors, while they’re away from existing 4G, 5G, or Wi-Fi coverage, and most importantly, can see the sky.
Docomo reported 6.5 million cumulative connecting customers in the first three months through the end of July, which indicates that the new service already has users trying it out at least once, if not using it more often than that.
Mobile V2 Brings Voice and Data
The V2 agreement moves beyond the limited capabilities of V1, and enables voice calling, browsing, and high-speed internet alongside the existing capabilities, which is expected to launch in 2028. Starlink’s announcement also confirms that Mobile V2 will bring 5G speeds, alongside streaming video.
Voice and high-speed browsing will drastically change how everyday users approach Starlink Mobile. As it stands today, V1 acts more like a safety net for messages and the limited selection of messaging-related apps that are allowed to use data.
V2, on the other hand, acts as a more complete and normal connection, enabling users to step fully away from conventional cellular connectivity without a major hiccup in service.
