The programming world has moved quickly over the past few years. Developers have gone from adding autocomplete tools to familiar IDEs such as JetBrains and VS Code to handing entire tasks to terminal-based agents such as OpenAI’s Codex, Anthropic’s Claude Code, and Google’s Antigravity.

These agents do much more than suggest the next line of code. Given a goal, they can inspect a new or existing codebase, edit files, execute shell commands, search documentation, run tests, and continue working through a problem with relatively little supervision.

Grok Build is SpaceXAI’s entry into that fast-moving field, with a Grok-powered coding agent designed for professional software engineering and complex coding work. It runs primarily in the terminal, but it can also work headlessly in automations or connect to other applications through the Agent Client Protocol.

Coding With Agents

A normal LLM can explain how code works, or even produce snippets of code with instructions. However, a human developer still has to move that into a project and validate it. On the other hand, a coding agent is given access to an entire working environment.

There, it can see how files and functions relate to each other, make coordinated edits across multiple files, run test suites, log, and fix problems all along the way. That moves the prompt from the developer away from a query like “How do I implement X”, into “Implement X”. The coding agent then goes on to decide which files it needs to edit, and what tools it needs to use to accomplish the task.

How Does Grok Build Work?

Grok Build is a full-screen, mouse-enabled terminal interface. Once directed to a project folder, it reads the repository, follows project-level instructions such as AGENTS.md, and uses its built-in tools to search the web, edit code, and execute tasks. At the time of writing, Grok Build is powered by Grok 4.6, which SpaceXAI also offers separately through the xAI API.

Grok Build can do tasks as simple as explaining a file or function, or as complex as using Plan Mode to shape the approach of function design or task execution. You can also use Sessions to pause and resume tasks, allowing work on longer tasks to continue without overloading the context window.

The same Grok Build agent can also be run without the interactive interface, if run on a headless client or through a terminal. A grok -p command can return plain text, JSON, or streaming JSON, making it suitable for scripts, bots, and continuous-integration workflows. Grok Build also supports the Agent Client Protocol, or ACP, which lets editors and other applications use it as an embedded coding agent.

Parallel Subagents

One of the most powerful features of Grok Build is its ability to delegate work to independent subagents. Each subagent receives its own context and returns a summary to the main session when it finishes. Grok Build also comes with built-in, pre-baked subagents, including a general-purpose agent, a read-only exploration agent, and a planning agent.

That means tasks can be attacked from multiple directions at once. One subagent could address the frontend, while another reviews the server infrastructure, while a third follows up on an issue logged in GitHub. Parallel workers can also commit to separate Git worktrees, reducing the chance for overwriting changes.

MCP Servers, Plugins, Skills, ACP, and Hooks

Grok Build is designed to be extended beyond the tools included with the CLI. Model Context Protocol servers can provide access to anything from your mail account to your GitHub. Depending on the MCP, it could mean reviewing incoming issues, querying a database, searching internal documentation, or even interacting with another development platform.

Skills are reusable folders containing instructions, scripts, and supporting resources for a particular workflow. Plugins can bundle those skills with custom agents, hooks, MCP servers, and language servers, while hooks provide additional control around what the agent does and when. That includes safety checks before running shell commands, running formatting or linting after file edits, or even sending out a notification to the user once the agent is done its task.

SpaceXAI has also built in compatibility with conventions used by other tools. Grok Build can read Claude Code instruction files and extensions, Cursor MCP and hook configurations, and the broader AGENTS.md instruction-file format.

Grok Build Is Open Source

SpaceXAI has released the Grok Build source code on GitHub. The repository includes the Rust-based agent runtime, terminal interface, built-in tools, plan-review system, and extension framework.

The harness wrapped around Grok 4.6 is open, and developers can inspect how Grok Build assembles context and dispatches tool calls, compile the client themselves, modify its behaviour, or point it at a custom model. The first-party code is published under the Apache 2.0 licence.

Who Can Get Grok Build?

Grok Build launched in early beta for all SuperGrok and X Premium Plus subscribers. Those users can install the CLI and authenticate through a browser with the account attached to their subscription.

You can also authenticate via CLI using an xAI API key, making Grok Build practical for setup on remote machines, or in automated workflows. xAI also ships prebuilt binaries for macOS, Linux, and Windows.

Setting Up Grok Build

On macOS, Linux, or Git Bash on Windows, SpaceXAI provides the following installer:

curl -fsSL https://x.ai/cli/install.sh | bash

Windows users can install it from PowerShell:

irm https://x.ai/cli/install.ps1 | iex

Once installed, move into a project and start an interactive session:

cd your-project
grok

The first launch opens a browser for authentication. From there, a useful first prompt is simply, “Explain this repository.” That gives Grok Build a chance to map the project before it is asked to change anything. For consequential work, plan mode and a clean Git branch are the best path forward.

Grok Build is xAI’s entry into an already crowded market, but it is a well thought-through effort. Parallel subagents, an open-source harness, and industry-standard compatibility make it easy to deploy and use. Plan Mode and support for both an interactive environment and headless, automated workflows means it’s a reliable, credible alternative to Codex and Claude Code.
