Elon Musk said on Friday, September 11, 2026, that Grok 4.7 still needs a few more days before it is ready. Musk pointed to several reinforcement learning issues that are affecting how the model handles difficult tasks, including giving up too early and not checking its own work rigorously enough.
As usual, these types of readiness updates come directly from Musk, rather than from official xAI or SpaceX platforms. Musk didn’t provide a firm release date, but it seems that Grok 4.7 should still be releasing by the end of September.
One of the biggest challenges with models as they continue to grow is inflated responses, which when working on long problems, can actually run through the entire context window. xAI appears to be tackling this very problem with Grok 4.7 right now, with the model in the final phases of reinforcement learning.
If a model manages to eat through its context window in a response, it will likely stop responding, or screw completely off course. In fact, xAI recently implemented the Imagine Video agent to stop just this problem occurring with its video generation models.
What He Is Fixing First
The issues Musk described are less about adding new features and more about how Grok behaves when a problem becomes difficult. An overly aggressive length penalty can encourage the model to end its response too quickly. Musk also pointed to the model giving up too early on hard problems. In other words, Grok may be capable of solving a task but still decide to abandon it before completing the necessary work.
The third issue is self-checking. If the model does not spend enough effort reviewing its own reasoning and answer, it is less likely to catch mistakes before responding. Taken together, these are all reinforcement learning behaviours that can affect the reliability of the final output.
Still No Firm Release Date
Earlier public discussion had pointed toward an upcoming Grok 4.7 release. Musk’s latest comment pushes that expectation out by at least a few days, though this is in line with release date delays we’ve seen from other Musk time estimates.
The infamous “2-weeks” quote seems to strike true time and time again, whether it be with SpaceX, xAI, or Tesla.
For now, the clearest takeaway is that Grok 4.7 appears to be in the final stages of reinforcement learning work, with response length, persistence on difficult tasks, and self-checking among the areas still being tuned.
