Starshield AI’s Grok for Government is live on GenAI.mil as of Monday, 31 August. That means personnel at the U.S. Department of War can use the government-tailored Grok model on the department’s existing generative-AI portal, accredited for Impact Level 5 and controlled unclassified information, alongside OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mil and Google Gemini.
They do not need a new consumer Grok account, and they do not leave the portal they already use. GenAI.mil opened last year as a central, secure shop for commercial frontier models so sensitive government data does not have to travel through ordinary consumer AI products.
Google’s Gemini was first on the platform, and Monday is Grok for Government actually going live there after an earlier agreement that said the model would follow. The department says more than 1.7 million unique users have already signed on, out of about 3 million military, civilian and contractor personnel.
What Grok Adds
The department listed Grok for Government with deep-thinking inference; Auto, Fast and Expert reasoning modes; customisable workspaces; persistent projects; and reusable playbooks meant to capture and scale institutional knowledge. Cited uses include market-research analysis for acquisition professionals and supply-chain management for logisticians, the kind of unclassified staff work that benefits from a model that can keep a project together over time.
Starshield AI’s Grok for Government will provide the warfighter with immediate productivity gains, stronger knowledge continuity and more secure and efficient collaboration.
The same announcement said the new model lets the Joint Force execute missions faster and with greater precision across those acquisition and logistics jobs, among other unclassified operational contexts.
ChatGPT Mil as Well
OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mil went live on GenAI.mil the same day. The department said it brings a familiar commercial experience — chat, files, projects and custom GPTs — into the secure environment for document-heavy unclassified work such as planning, policy, logistics and administration, with further features sequenced over time.
Personnel who already use the portal can now pick among Gemini, ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government for a given task rather than leaving the IL5 system.
Built for CUI
Both new models cleared Impact Level 5, the department’s authorisation for environments that store and process non-public, sensitive unclassified data, including CUI. GenAI.mil remains an enterprise platform for that unclassified work. The department has talked separately about putting commercial models on classified networks, but Monday’s go-live is the IL5 portal people already log into.
For anyone already on GenAI.mil, the practical change is a third frontier model on the same login, built for the acquisition and supply-chain work the department named, without sending that CUI through a consumer Grok window.
