Starlink offers several official mounting options for vehicles, ranging from permanent installations that attach directly to the roof to removable mounts designed for roof racks. The right choice depends largely on the vehicle, how often Starlink will be used, and whether the installation needs to be permanent.
Choose by installation
For a permanent installation, the Mobility Mount is Starlink’s primary option for mounting directly to a vehicle. It is designed to create a weather-resistant seal and can be installed on surfaces including metal, fiberglass, wood, and plastic.
This makes it a better fit for RVs, work vehicles, and other vehicles where Starlink will remain installed for extended periods. The tradeoff is that installation generally involves drilling into the vehicle, making careful placement and cable routing important.
For a removable setup, Starlink offers Roof Rack Mounts designed to attach the dish to compatible roof racks. This avoids permanently modifying the vehicle and allows the dish to be removed when it is not needed.
Starlink Mini
Starlink Mini has the simplest vehicle setup of Starlink’s current hardware.
The Mini Mobility Mount is designed for permanent installations and uses corrosion-resistant hardware. It supports a nine degree mounting angle and weighs 0.6 kg (1.32lb).
For temporary installations, the Mini Roof Rack Mount attaches to compatible roof-rack bars between 12-48 mm (0.47-1.26 in) thick and up to 88 mm (3.5 in) wide. It is not designed for round-profile bars.
The Mini itself weighs about 1.1 kg (2.43 lb) and measures approximately 299 × 259 mm (11.75 x 10.2 in). Starlink also offers an official 12–24V DC car adapter with a 5 meter USB-C cable capable of supplying up to 100W. Typical power consumption is around 25–40W, making the Mini particularly well suited to vehicle use.
Unlike larger Starlink systems, Mini includes an integrated Wi-Fi router, although an additional router can be used when greater coverage is required.
Standard 4 and larger systems
The Standard Mobility Mount is intended for larger Starlink systems, including Standard 4, Standard 4X, and compatible Performance/Enterprise hardware. It can also be installed on certain slotted rack rails.
Starlink’s Standard Roof Rack Mount provides a removable alternative, fitting compatible bars between 15-44.5 mm (0.59-1.75 in) thick and up to 95 mm (3.74 in) wide, as well as supported T-slot systems.
Starlink Standard uses a larger dish and separate router while requiring AC power, making them better suited to larger vehicles where there is sufficient roof space and room for interior equipment.
Check before drilling
A permanent vehicle installation requires more planning than simply attaching the dish. Consider the mounting surface, cable routing, power source, roof clearance, and whether the vehicle will regularly travel at highway speeds. The Starlink app is useful for obstruction clearance before installation at the planned location.
Most importantly, in-motion Starlink service depends on the hardware, plan, authorization, and local availability. Roam plans may support in-motion use, but the applicable terms and availability should be confirmed before installing the system.
