xAI has launched Chat Agents, a new way for developers to build service bots that operate directly inside X Chat. Using the X Chat API and Chat XDK, developers can create agentic chat experiences for their products and services without pulling users out of an ongoing conversation.

Each official bot lives inside X Chat and receives its own handle. X also labels it “Automated by @ owner,” making the account behind the bot visible to users. That means users will immediately know who the developer or business behind an automated account is, and who they need to seek additional support from if needed.
Chat Agents are built on top of X Chat’s fully encrypted messaging system. That provides conversations with agents the same private environment as ordinary X Chat messaging, rather than as an outside, public-facing feature.
What Do They Do?
xAI showed off several practical examples of immediate uses of these agents. One demonstration involved taking coffee orders from people in a group chat, while other examples included more straightforward scheduling and customer support.
These published use cases give some broader direction on what X imagines the basic uses are, but given their deep access to X Chat and the xAI API, they will likely become quite capable in the right hands.
Starter Pack for New Devs
To lower the barrier for developers, xAI has already released a starter framework designed to take a project from zero, all the way to a working Chat Agent. The official skeleton, available on GitHub, gives devs a starting point for connecting their own product logic and APIs to the X Chat API and Chat XDK.
The value of these new Chat Agents will depend on how quickly and easily third-party developers can integrate them into their own workflows.
The Everything API
xAI’s team is describing Chat Agents as part of its “Everything API,” and the name points towards Elon Musk’s original ambition to make X the Everything App. Messaging is normally where people discuss what they want to do, and service bots could let them act on those same intentions in the same place.
Alongside X Money, xAI is slowly bringing together all the features of an everything app where people spend most of their time.
