Elon Musk is warming to the idea of an Amazon rival built for AI agents. On Oct. 15, after Grok Bot users reported that Amazon was turning their agents away, he floated starting “a competitor to Amazon,” then endorsed a pitch for one that is “agent first.”
The same day, he pledged that SpaceX will cover Grok Bot users if the agent botches a purchase or leaks their card. The Amazon blocks are catching users by surprise, noting that it breaks Amazon’s Terms of Service to use unauthorized third-party agents on a user’s behalf.
What Musk Promised
Musk was quoting a user who said Grok Bot had booked a flight for him after he sent it a photo of his credit card. His reply:
This works well. If Grok @Bot makes a mistake with a purchase or leaks your card (never happened yet), SpaceX will make you whole.
Elon Musk on X, Oct. 15
That covers two things: a purchase mistake and a leaked card. Musk did not say what counts as a mistake, whether it covers knock-on costs such as a missed trip, or how a user would make a claim. SpaceXSI has not published a policy to match.
What the Terms Say Today
The written terms still put agent purchases on the user. The Grok Bot Terms say the customer “is solely responsible for charges, commitments, communications, and other consequences resulting from Agentic Actions,” and that the provider “disclaims all liability for Agentic Actions to the fullest extent permitted by law.” They also warn that approval and review controls “may not identify or prevent every unintended, unauthorized, or harmful action,” and tell users to apply human review before financial transactions.
SpaceXSI’s Consumer Terms, last updated Oct. 12, say users are “responsible and accept liability for the User Content and any Agentic Actions you direct.” They cap SpaceXSI’s liability at what the user paid or US$100, whichever is greater, except for wilful misconduct or gross negligence. The same terms say statements by employees or representatives are excluded from the agreement.
The Grok Bot Terms also say the agent may keep data, files, browser sessions and credentials in a persistent cloud environment, which is where a saved card would live. If you hand Grok Bot a card, a card with a low limit or a virtual number keeps the exposure small, and your card issuer’s fraud protections still apply. For sign-ins, Grok Bot can also use 1Password instead of storing passwords directly.
The Amazon Reports
Late on Oct. 14, X user Nic Cruz Patane posted a screenshot of the message he got when his Grok Bot tried to shop on Amazon: “Continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use, to which our customers have agreed.”
He wrote that his bots “can no longer access Amazon for orders or anything.” Other users posted similar complaints. It is not clear how widely the block applies.
Musk’s answer was to shop elsewhere. “Just ask Grok @Bot to buy what you want someplace else and get a better deal,” he wrote. “There are far more purchasing websites than just Amazon!” In an earlier reply, he said his own Bot “bought LEGO directly from the LEGO website no problem.”
An Agent-First Amazon Rival
Later on Oct. 15 Musk posted: “Maybe we should start a competitor to Amazon.”It drew more than 120,000 likes and 15,000 replies within hours. That afternoon, X user Tyler Palmer sketched what one could look like: a store that is “agent first – built for personal agents” and “america first – sells only products from usa.”
Musk quoted it with two words: “Makes sense.”
Neither SpaceX nor SpaceXSI has announced a store, a team or a timeline. But it points at the real fight. Amazon is shutting out agents that shop for people, and Musk now owns an agent that shops for people.
A store built to welcome those agents, with checkout made for software instead of humans clicking buttons, would turn Amazon’s block into Grok Bot’s advantage. Our read: if SpaceX does move on this, it is more likely to start as Grok Bot partnerships with retailers that let agents in than as a warehouse network to rival Amazon’s.
What It Means if You Shop With Grok Bot
For now, Grok Bot can still buy from retailers that let it in, and Musk has said publicly that SpaceX will make users whole for purchase mistakes and card leaks. The binding documents have not changed. Until SpaceXSI writes the pledge into its terms or explains how to claim, keep approvals switched on for purchases and check what the agent is about to buy before it pays.
