Starlink Residential customers in parts of the U.S. Midwest are moving to local, demand-based prices. Depending on where they live, prices can sit up to 20% above or below list. Customers in Missouri and Kansas reported getting an email from SpaceX on Oct. 29 about the change, PCMag reports.

“Starlink prices [are] dynamically based on supply of capacity and demand from customers,” the email says. “As our constellation grows and network capacity changes, service pricing may change from time to time.”

What the Email Says

SpaceX says it will review prices “roughly quarterly,” and warns that “you may see more frequent changes than we’ve made historically or compared to other providers. But these won’t just be increases: as we expand capacity, service pricing in your area may be lowered.” The email credits new V3 satellites with adding capacity, but says subscriber numbers keep growing “both locally and worldwide.”

New prices start with the first billing cycle on or after Nov. 30. One copy shared by Sawyer Merritt says the customer’s bill “will be adjusted to $156/month.”

Same Plan, $52 Apart

The local prices already show on Starlink.com’s sign-up page once you enter a location. PCMag found them, and SuperchargedDaily rechecked them on Oct. 30. List prices are $55 for 100 Mbps, $85 for 200 Mbps and $130 for Residential Max.

  • Rolla, Mo.: Residential Max at $156 on the sign-up page, 20% above list
  • Warsaw, Mo.: Max at $143, 10% above
  • Kansas City, Mo.: $49.50, $76.50 and $117, 10% below
  • Marysville, Kan.: $44, $68 and $104, 20% below

That puts the same Max plan $52 a month apart between Rolla and Marysville. SuperchargedDaily found every local price is exactly 0.8, 0.9, 1.1 or 1.2 times list, and the site labels plans with demand tiers such as “max-rental-t1-demand,” though the tiers don’t always line up across plans in the same place. PCMag says the site’s code currently caps changes at 20% either way.

A Missouri user on Reddit, whose bill PCMag didn’t independently verify, says their 100 Mbps plan is going from $50 to $60.50. Tim Belfall, a director at installer Westend WiFi, told PCMag that price cuts are showing up in the UK too.

Why SpaceX Is Doing It

SpaceX hasn’t announced the change publicly or said how many customers or areas are affected, and it didn’t respond to PCMag. In Q3, Starlink’s consumer ARPU was $69 a month across 13.6 million consumer subscribers, down from $83 a year earlier, SpaceX reported in its Q3 results.

Satellite analyst Tim Farrar told PCMag the model could help Starlink compete with ground-based internet: “Uniform national pricing makes it hard to compete with terrestrial. If you reduce price in low demand (terrestrially competitive) areas and increase price in high demand (uncompetitive) areas then ARPUs should go up.”

It follows a May increase: SpaceX raised fees for the Residential and Roam plans and for Standby Mode by $5 and $10, PCMag reported. It has tried location pricing before: in 2023 it added $10 in high-demand areas and cut prices where capacity was plentiful, back when there was only one Residential plan.

SpaceX hasn’t said whether dynamic pricing will go national, how large each pricing area is, or whether existing customers can lock in a rate.
