SpaceX completes $60 billion acquisition of Cursor

SpaceX expands into AI software

SpaceX has completed its acquisition of Anysphere, the company behind Cursor, in a $60 billion all-stock transaction. The acquisition comes after the two companies established a compute and collaboration agreement in April 2026, laying the groundwork for the eventual deal in June.

Rather than paying cash, the transaction was completed using SpaceX Class A shares. This allows SpaceX to acquire Anysphere without expending its cash reserves, all while bringing Cursor directly into its expanding AI business.

The acquisition is another major step in SpaceX’s push towards AGI as the company expands its compute infrastructure and looks to build AI products that extend beyond its existing hardware and satellite businesses.

What is Cursor?

Founded in 2022 by Anysphere, Cursor is an AI-native IDE (Integrated Development Environment) designed to help developers write, edit, review, and refactor software using AI agents.

Unlike a traditional code editor with an AI assistant added on top, Cursor is built around AI-assisted development. Its agents can understand large portions of a codebase and perform multi-step programming tasks, allowing developers to describe what they want to accomplish rather than manually writing every change.

Cursor has also developed its own AI models for software development. Its Composer models are designed specifically for coding workloads, giving the company its own technology alongside access to leading third party AI models.

Why SpaceX wants Cursor

The acquisition further strengthens SpaceX’s growing AI focus. One of the key use cases for generative AI has been coding, as structured data, rapid feedback, and frequent interaction between developers generates useful training data at speed.

The companies’ April agreement gave Cursor access to SpaceX’s GPU computing capacity while allowing the two companies to collaborate on improving AI models, including Grok. Cursor also contributed personnel, datasets, workflows, prompts and technical expertise to the collaboration.

This relationship gives SpaceX more than just an AI IDE it can offer to its existing userbase. It provides a direct connection to millions of developer workflows and a platform through which SpaceX can deliver AI-assisted programming tools.

Cursor could become part of SpaceX’s AI ecosystem

Cursor could eventually become closely integrated with SpaceX’s existing AI infrastructure and Grok. The acquisition is part of a broader strategy to vertically integrate compute, AI models, and applications that use them all under the same company.

The focus on vertical integration is nothing new for Musk’s enterprises. Control over multiple layers of the AI stack, from compute used to train models, to the harnesses and apps which users interact are valuable in providing detailed training data. The acquisition also gives SpaceX a direct presence in the rapidly growing AI-assisted software development market rather than competing solely through AI models such as Grok.

What happens next

With Cursor now operating as a wholly owned SpaceX subsidiary, it likely remains a matter of time until the companies are fully merged, especially with the recent launch of Grok Bot.

While Cursor is expected to remain a developer focused product, its relationship with Grok and SpaceX’s computing infrastructure could become critical to SpaceX’s AI ambitions.
