We started in 2026 because too much of this beat is either a press-release rewrite or a hype cycle. Our job is to make the complex parts understandable without flattening the details that matter. If a patent is just a patent, we say so. If a flight test is a test, we do not call it operational.
The name is not a metaphor from a branding meeting. A grid fin is the titanium control surface SpaceX uses to steer a Falcon 9 booster back through the atmosphere. It is the hardware that makes reuse look routine. That is the kind of detail we like to get right.
What we cover

How we work
We publish two kinds of pieces. News when something actually moves: a rollout, a flight, a product launch, a filing. Explainers when the hardware or the company needs more than a headline: how a landing works, what Starlink V3 changes, what a patent does and does not prove.
We prioritize primary sources: company announcements, patents, launch licences, regulatory records, and on-the-record statements. Rumours and preliminary claims are labelled as such. We credit other reporting when we use it.
The Grid Fin is independently owned and edited by Karan Singh. A small team of human writers reports, explains, and edits the work. We may use AI tools to organize research, transcribe, or compare sources. AI output is not a source, and it does not publish. A human writes. A second human editor approves.
